Quibron-T

Quibron-T (Theophylline) is a bronchodilator used to treat the symptoms of asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.

Quibron T: Advanced Bronchodilation for Respiratory Relief

Quibron T is a prescription medication formulated to provide effective and sustained relief from bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Combining the bronchodilator theophylline with guaifenesin, an expectorant, it works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchial airways and thinning mucus to facilitate easier breathing. This dual-action approach makes it a trusted option for patients requiring comprehensive respiratory management under medical supervision. Proper usage, as directed by a healthcare provider, ensures optimal therapeutic outcomes while minimizing risks.

  • Extended-release tablet formulation
  • Designed for twice-daily dosing convenience
  • Precisely calibrated to maintain therapeutic serum levels

Common use

Quibron T is commonly prescribed for the treatment and prevention of symptoms related to reversible airway obstruction. This includes wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness in conditions such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, and emphysema. It is suitable for adults and children above a certain age, as determined by a physician, and is often part of a broader management plan that may include lifestyle modifications and other medications.

Dosage and direction

Dosage must be individualized based on age, weight, clinical condition, and serum theophylline levels. The typical starting dose for adults is one tablet twice daily, approximately every 12 hours. It should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals, with a full glass of water. Tablets must be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken. Dosage adjustments should only be made under medical supervision. Regular monitoring of blood theophylline levels is recommended to avoid toxicity.

Precautions

  • Inform your healthcare provider of any history of heart disease, hypertension, seizures, liver problems, or peptic ulcers.
  • Avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine-containing products (coffee, tea, chocolate) while using this medication.
  • Use with caution in elderly patients and those with compromised hepatic function.
  • Smoking may alter theophylline metabolism and necessitate dosage adjustments.
  • Not recommended for use during acute bronchospasm episodes without adjunct fast-acting rescue medication.

Contraindications

Quibron T is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to theophylline, guaifenesin, or any component of the formulation. It should not be used by patients with active peptic ulcer disease or uncontrolled seizure disorders. Concurrent use with other xanthine derivatives is not advised. Use is also contraindicated in those with certain cardiac arrhythmias.

Possible side effects

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, headache, insomnia, and mild stomach discomfort. Less frequently, patients may experience nervousness, restlessness, palpitations, or increased urination. Serious side effects such as seizures, persistent vomiting, irregular heartbeat, or severe allergic reactions require immediate medical attention.

Drug interaction

Quibron T interacts with numerous medications. Notable interactions include:

  • Cimetidine, erythromycin, fluoroquinolones: may increase theophylline levels
  • Phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampin: may decrease theophylline levels
  • Beta-blockers: may antagonize bronchodilator effects
  • Ephedrine: may increase risk of CNS stimulation Inform your doctor of all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up. Maintaining a consistent schedule is important to keep theophylline levels stable.

Overdose

Symptoms of theophylline overdose may include severe nausea/vomiting, agitation, tremors, rapid heartbeat, seizures, or cardiac arrest. This is a medical emergency; seek immediate help. Treatment may involve activated charcoal, supportive care, and in severe cases, hemodialysis.
